The independent government of the Nisqually Indian Tribe operates its own justice system, which includes a comprehensive public safety department. The department is composed of three major divisions – Police, Corrections, and Fish and Wildlife.

Each division fulfills a needed service to the Nisqually people and our surrounding community. The men and women who serve in our law enforcement programs are dedicated to providing the Nisqually community with a safe place to live, work and go to school.

Police Department

The Police Department is responsible for enforcing the law on the Nisqually Reservation. We strive for public safety and ensure emergency response readiness. Similar to other police agencies elsewhere in the region, our primary mission is to protect the health and welfare of the community.

Tom Iyall, Chief of Police

Department of Fish and Wildlife

Fish and Wildlife officers enforce the rules regarding hunting and fishing that ensure adherence to our treaties and environmental laws, specifically the Nisqually Natural Resources Code.

Department of Corrections

The Correction Center is charged with the safekeeping, care and custody of all inmates on the reservation. Our commitment extends beyond custody to providing opportunities to inmates for rehabilitation and change.

The Nisqually Corrections facility secures and humanely holds people legally detained by the police or sentenced by the court. The corrections division maintains the security and orderly operation of the facility, ensures the safety of the public, visitors, staff, as well as inmates, and provides the necessary services required by recognized correctional and Bureau of Indian Affairs standards to the inmate population.
